the best advice i’ve ever received: ‘Start before you’re ready’

Who’s going to be the first one to get this tattoo?!

This sign hit me like a ton of bricks when I saw it at a Burning Man art exhibit!

Have you ever met someone that is afraid of commitment? What about someone who says they ‘would love’ to do this or that, but never do? How about your friend or relative that uses words like ‘maybe someday’ or ‘I wish I could do xyz’.

If you say you don’t know someone like that, sorry but I’m calling bull shit.

The world is full of them.

Maybe you are that person. If you are that person, and you are cool with not getting exactly what you want in life, no need to read any further.

On the other hand, if you have a fire in your belly and you’ve always wanted to accomplish something big, grab life by the horns, or start living the life you have always wanted – listen up.

Stop fucking thinking that way.

Seriously. When I hear the ‘I wish I could’ line, it drives me crazy.

Wishing gets you nowhere. Doing the work is the only thing that matters.

Everything worth a damn in this life is that way. You have to create a plan and take action to get what you want. You can’t just snap your fingers and have everything you’ve ever wanted. Stop watching so much damn TV.

You need to put in the work and take consistent action over time - it is the only answer people.

But that’s another topic for another day. Let me cut right to the chase and give you a little hint.

The best thing you can do right NOW, is start – even before you feel ready.

Here’s what I mean.

We all start in the same place: no money, no resources, no contacts, no experience. The difference is that some people — the winners — choose to start anyway.” – James Clear

1.     You Are Never Going to Feel Like The Time is Right

We’ve all been there. You have a big decision you have to make, and you wonder “Is now the right time?”

A lot of people ask themselves this when they think about  having a kid or getting married. The same goes for starting a business or taking control of your life.

The time is NEVER right. The sooner you realize that, the better off you’ll be. Countless people have lost decades of their life scared to take action because of this-or-that excuse.

Don’t be that person.

The ONLY time is NOW.

“Screw it, just get on and do it.” – Richard Branson

2.     You Don’t Have To Be An Expert

Our society is obsessed with expertise. More often than not, if you are not an expert at something, the mentality is that you don’t deserve to be talking about it.

Fuck that. Here’s why.

If you feel like you need to be an expert to do something, you’ll never do it. It just takes too long.

All due respect Malcom Gladwell, but 10,000 hours is a shit ton. Who has that kind of time to get good at something?

Life is too short.

And don’t forget, you don’t have to be the best (there will always be someone better), just good enough.

There’s another way, trust me. You think I’m a true expert at anything – not at all. I’m just insanely curious, 100% dedicated to learning, and take risks on things I’m interested in. And I’m not the only one.

3.     Stop Procrastinating

If you have the “I’ll do that tomorrow” mentality, stop it.

Instead adopt the “Do it right now” mentality.

I’ll admit, procrastination is not the easiest thing to overcome. It’s all about changing your mindset.

One of the easiest ways to start is to adopt the 2 minute rule. It basically says if you can either do something or start something in 2 minutes, do it now. If you can put on your running shoes and get out the door in two minutes, you’ll probably keep running. If you can load the dishwasher in 2 minutes, you should just do it know and not wait for it to pile up.

Same goes for starting a bigger task like a side hustle or new project. Just get started (even if you’re not ready), and 9/10 you’ll keep going.

4.     Everything You Need You Already Have

You’re bound to feel uncertain, unprepared, and unqualified. But let me assure you of this: what you have right now is enough. You can plan, analyze, and revise anything to death. What’s more important is that you realize that in most cases you already have enough to start.

It doesn't matter if you're trying to start a business, get fit, write a book, or achieve any number of goals… who you are, what you have, and what you know right now is good enough to get going.

You are inevitably going to learn as you go. The irony is that it’s often hard to know what you need and what questions to ask until you start.

Plus, once you get the momentum going you’ll have a whole lot more momentum to continue.

Now get out there and get started!!
